RESUMO

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Career Adapt-abilities Scale (CAAS) and analyze the relationships between sociodemographic variables and career adaptability using the MIMIC model with DIF. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, the CAAS, consisting of four sub-scales-concern, control, curiosity, and confidence-each comprising six items, was administered to 620 undergraduate students from 34 universities in Thailand. Among the participants, women constituted 66.77%, while men accounted for 32.58% (Mean Age = 20.33). To explore the influence of sociodemographic characteristics on specific CAAS item responses, a Multiple-Indicators, Multiple-Causes model with Differential Item Functioning (MIMIC-model with DIF) was employed. Results: The findings revealed robust internal consistency and reliability in the CAAS. Both the four-factor and second-order factor models exhibited excellent fit indices, emphasizing the significance of each item within the measure. Sociodemographic characteristics did not demonstrate a significant direct effect on the four CAAS subscales, it is worth noting the exception regarding paternal education. Paternal education was found to have a statistical significance impact on two specific CAAS items: "looking for opportunities to grow as a person" and "becoming curious about new opportunities." Conclusion: These findings underscore the intricate influence of paternal education on specific aspects of career adaptability, suggesting that certain dimensions of career adaptability may be shaped by factors extending beyond the conventional sociodemographic variables examined in this study. Future research could delve deeper into the complex interplay of sociodemographic factors and individual attributes to provide a more holistic perspective on career adaptability in Thailand.

RESUMO

Here, we describe strategies for integrating transferrable professional development (PD) skills into research learning environments for marginalized undergraduate students. The undergraduate research experience evolved to include the competencies students need to be successful and to gain a sense of belonging in the chemistry community they are seeking. These asset-based transferrable PD skills are part of the "hidden curriculum" not taught in traditional classrooms and yet are an integral part of student learning and success. Furthermore, current practices, or lack thereof, tend to promote inequity and fail to amplify key asset-based skills for marginalized students to navigate academic, industrial, and professional settings effectively. Consequently, many students leave STEM communities. The following six PD skills are core competencies that have been implemented in a diverse undergraduate research environment to equip students with the skills needed to navigate various STEM environments. These include: (1) Effective Communication, (2) Negotiation, (3) Leadership, (4) Networking, (5) Interpersonal skills, and (6) Active Listening. Learning topics for each of the PD skills enable mentors to help preprofessional, marginalized students gain a sense of belonging, build a network, connect with mentors, develop self-advocacy, implement interpersonal skills, manage conflict, and navigate spaces that do not fully represent them. The inclusive integration of scientific and PD skills into research experiences serves as a template that can be extended to high school and graduate students. These integrated transferrable skills are one way to increase diversity in STEM professions and bridge the gap in leadership in academia and industry.

RESUMO

To respond to the increasing challenges of the XXI century, career guidance is used as a device to reduce inequalities, to expand the range of opportunities for all people, to deconstruct the stereotypes and the stigmatizations that tend to relegate specific social categories to particular working niches, and to offer people the chance to express their differences and diversities. This study reports the results of research aimed at understanding the dynamics of career construction in people with imprisonment experience through the exploration of their systems of influences; the stories of the inmates were collected using My System of Career Influences (MSCI). In the analysis of the narratives and the systems of influences, the focus was placed on the balanced time perspective as a core dimension to foster career construction and to look at future possibilities. The results show that the participants are mainly focused on the past, and their focus on the present is narrow and seems to represent a moment of stalemate, preventing the possibility for inmates to imagine their future. Suggestions for practical implications of career counseling for inmates are provided, and the knowledge about the temporal orientation of prisoners will enable those who do not show any hope of achieving positive interactions to be reached and provide a higher degree of individualization for social rehabilitation proposals.

RESUMO

Machine Learning concept learns from experiences, inferences and conceives complex queries. Machine learning techniques can be used to develop the educational framework which understands the inputs from students, parents and with intelligence generates the result. The framework integrates the features of Machine Learning (ML), Explainable AI (XAI) to analyze the educational factors which are helpful to students in achieving career placements and help students to opt for the right decision for their career growth. It is supposed to work like an expert system with decision support to figure out the problems, the way humans solve the problems by understanding, analyzing, and remembering. In this paper, the authors have proposed a framework for career counseling of students using ML and AI techniques. ML-based White and Black Box models analyze the educational dataset comprising of academic and employability attributes that are important for the job placements and skilling of the students. In the proposed framework, White Box and Black Box models get trained over an educational dataset taken in the study. The Recall and F-Measure score achieved by the Naive Bayes for performing predictions is 91.2% and 90.7% that is best compared to the score of Logistic Regression, Decision Tree, SVM, KNN, and Ensemble models taken in the study.

RESUMO

This study examines the use of individual development plans (IDPs) in a structured mentoring program as an effective mechanism for reducing identity-related anxiety for underrepresented trainees and increasing their learner agency. Social cognitive theory served to provide the theoretical framework for our implementation of IDPs and our investigation of the effects of completing IDPs on trainees attaining academic goals and subsequent success in enrolling in competitive PhD programs. Results suggest that IDPs are also an effective tool that can allow faculty mentors to provide the social support necessary for trainees to persist in accomplishing their short- and long-term learning goals. Additionally, trainee self-agency, in the use of the IDP and mentoring, seemed to provide an alternative narrative to ability as a sole predictor of STEM achievement. We also found that IDPs helped foster social support networks, providing stability, predictability, and a sense of belonging. Specifically, IDPs helped foster the emotional and informational support necessary for trainees to persist, despite obstacles, as they strived to attain their learning goals.

RESUMO

The objective of this study was to verify the mediating effect of career adaptability in levels of depressive symptomatology, hope, and satisfaction in postgraduate students in Stricto Sensu, and, as well as differences based on sociodemographic variables. A total of 2115 postgraduate students participated, with an average age of 28.91 years (SD = 5.17), 51.8% of whom were Master's degree students, and 74.4% were female. Participants responded to the Career Adapt-abilities Scale, Cognitive Hope Scale, and Baptista Depression Scale (adult version). The results indicated higher levels of depressive symptomatology for scholarship students and in the final phase of the course. The structural equations model indicated that career adaptability has a mediating effect over hope and depressive symptomatology. Self-centered hope and satisfaction on being a post-graduate student directly influence the level of career adaptability and depressive symptoms.

This article addresses the use of computer-assisted career guidance systems (CACGS) in career interventions. Major CACGS developed in the past decades were based on the trait-factor or person-environment fit approaches in their conceptualization and design. The strengths and limitations of these CACGS in addressing the career development needs of individuals are discussed. The Career Construction Theory (CCT) is a promising paradigm to guide the development of new generations of CACGS. The narrative tradition, career adaptability model, and life-design interventions of CCT offer rich conceptual and practical applications that could expand the scope and breadth of career exploration and identity construction through using CACGS. A digital system developed in Hong Kong called Infinity is a case-in-point of a CACGS where users could learn about career planning, engage in self and career construction through using the quantitative and qualitative assessment applications and gamified tools, take career planning actions over time, and communicate with their social supportive systems. Initial findings suggested that users of the system reported lesser decision-making difficulties, higher levels of decision clarity, and better understanding of what is career planning than non-users. Users from high academic achievement schools reported higher levels of career adaptability than their counterparts in schools of similar academic background. Users from low achievement schools reported higher intention to pursue government-supported universities than non-users from schools of similar background. Research and practice implications in schools and organizational settings are discussed.

RESUMO

The population of international students in South Korea is growing. During the career development phase, international students face unique challenges related to their bicultural identity and acculturation experiences. The present study examined the role of bicultural self-efficacy on mediating the relationship between acculturation and career decision-making self-efficacy for international students in South Korea. Responses from 120 international students in South Korea were analyzed using structural equation modeling. The results showed that bicultural self-efficacy fully mediated the relationship between acculturation to mainstream culture and career decision-making self-efficacy but did not mediate the relationship between acculturation to heritage culture and career decision-making self-efficacy. The implications for effective educational intervention for international college students' career development were discussed based on the results.

RESUMO

Career guidance and counseling (CGC) is needed by many university students in Pakistan. Career service providers (CSPs) can offer appropriate services if they have a sound understanding of CGC needs of students. This study explores perspectives of CSPs working in Pakistani universities about career needs of their students, services offered to their students and the challenges encountered in this process. Qualitative semi-structured interviews with seven CSPs working in two major cities of Pakistan were carried out. Thematic analysis revealed variety of needs (like self-awareness, decision making), services (like one to one counseling, career fairs, seminars) and multiple challenges (like unrealistic expectations of students, insufficient resources) regarding CGC. Results are discussed along with thematic maps. Research implies that CSPs could expand and promote their services; CGC could be customized as per local community needs; parental concerns could be dealt with CGC; CGC could be aligned with academia as well as industry. Future research could look into planning, execution, impact and comparisons of indigenous CGC services.

RESUMO

As it is one decade since the establishment of Kidd's model, an analysis of the career well-being (CWB) experienced by Eastern workers is both timely and necessary. To this end, we conducted a series of logical investigations of CWB in Taiwanese school teachers. Study 1 was conducted to conceptualize the main features of CWB (n = 135), and Study 2 was conducted using exploratory factor analysis to determine the validity of a four-factor measurement structure (n = 191). In Study 3, tests were completed to confirm the factor structure of the CWB (n = 533). Accordingly, we established a theory-based CWB measurement approach, and statistical analysis verified the convergent, divergent, and criterion validity of our CWB measurement model. Exploratory structural equation modeling rather than confirmatory factor analysis is recommended in discussions of CWB theory and practice in educational contexts. However, because our sample solely comprised Taiwanese teachers, our results are not generalizable to other occupations or cultures, even Eastern or Chinese-derived cultures. Implications for both theory and workplace counseling practice are presented.

RESUMO

Improvements in the survival and clinical outcomes of cystic fibrosis (CF) patients raised questions about their workforce participation and capacity to work. One hundred and ninety-six outpatients, attending the Adult CF Center of an Italian University Hospital, were enrolled between May 2020 and March 2021. The patients' personal and clinical characteristics, employment status, and profession were assessed. The Cystic Fibrosis Questionnaire-Revised and the work ability index (WAI) were employed to assess CF health-related quality of life and the employee's perception of their ability to work, respectively. Among the enrolled patients, 98 (50%) were employed. The non-working subjects were significantly younger (mean age ± standard deviation: 30 ± 10 vs. 37 ± 10 years) and were diagnosed with CF significantly earlier (9 ± 13 vs. 17 ± 18 years) than the employed subjects. The vast majority of CF workers (82.6%) were employed in tertiary professions. A general good work ability perception was determined in the employed population. Aging and being employed for >15 years could significantly predict a reduction in work ability, while a better quality of life was a positive predictor for its enhancement. Although further research is necessary, these results may introduce interdisciplinary CF healthcare management that includes a work function assessment, formal career counseling, and job guidance to support the personal, social and professional lives of CF patients.

RESUMO

Work is a multidimensional construct that plays a crucial role in people's lives, assuring their psychological well-being, social connections, and self-determination. "Decent" work is conceptualized as a satisfactory job in conditions of equity, security, and respect for human rights. The paper reports the results of a study on the perception of the future and decent work in young immigrants, at risk of undertaking undignified and unsatisfactory jobs. The data were collected through a semi-structured interview, aimed at exploring the representations of decent work and hope. Data analysis was conducted through both qualitative and quantitative methods. The results of the study are discussed with reference to career counseling promoting decent work for immigrant people, activating the motivation to plan the future, including hope.

RESUMO

The way people make career choices is often influenced by their idea of work. Alongside this concept, there is the idea of decent work, which takes the form of the opportunity, for men and women, to have productive, equal, safe, and rights-based work. We have conducted a study on these two concepts with a group of Italian adolescents, using both quantitative and qualitative methods. We found that most of the participants consider work as a means to obtain economic benefits and satisfy certain values, and decent work as characterized by the respect for rights and duties and economic benefits; a part of the participants fails in giving a definition of decent work or gives a negative definition of it. We deepened the study through quantitative analyses that revealed that those who have a more complex view of work and decent work also have higher levels of self-efficacy and career adaptability. These findings are discussed in the light of previous research and from a perspective that intends to give a contribution to career counseling practices.

RESUMO

The mapping of therapeutic collaboration throughout counseling deepens our understanding of how the helping relationship fosters client change. To better understand the process of career construction counseling (CCC), we analyzed the therapeutic collaboration on six successful face-to-face cases. The participants were six Portuguese adults, five women and one man, real clients of a career counseling service, and four psychologists, three female and one male trained in the career intervention model. The participants completed demographic questions and measures of career certainty, vocational identity, career indecision, and psychological functioning. The Therapeutic Collaboration Coding System was used to track collaboration throughout all interactive episodes. The clinical significance of the intervention was calculated by analyzing pre-post-test statistical differences for each case, with the Reliable Change Index and Z score. The findings evidenced a pattern of therapeutic collaboration evolution for good outcome cases. Based on this pattern, we propose a model of process-outcome evolution for the three phases of CCC.

RESUMO

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: A healthy mentor relationship is a mutually beneficial experience and a necessary part of the natural progression of a career in academic medicine. We sought to explore the advantages of and challenges to becoming a mentor in current academic urology. RECENT FINDINGS: Mentorship can promote self-confidence in the ability to choose a career, drive academic productivity, and even inspire a career in academic medicine. It is necessary to help promote advancement in diverse socioeconomic groups within medical trainees. Strong mentors can serve as role models to the next generation of doctors. However, the ability to be an effective mentor is being challenged in today's world of academic medicine. By staying current with the issues surrounding mentorship, an individual can be fulfilled and successful in training and guiding doctors into the new era of medicine.
